Getting Ready

Ginny pointed out to me that we can now say that we're leaving for China next week!! Wow!!

So, we've purchased our international flight tickets (3 there, 4 coming back!) and were fortunate enough to be able to purchase the upgrade to Economy plus on our long legs (Chicago to Beijing; Hong Kong to Chicago). Another good note was that our flights over are direct from Chicago... so no layovers in other countries like South Korea or Japan.

Anyways, the fact that our departure is now a handful of days away has started the supplies shopping side for our upcoming trip... purchasing little things like:
  • Toilet paper
  • Backpacks and small roller bags for the girls
  • Pain killers (Advil & Children's Tylenol)
  • Imodium AD
  • Ramen noodles & instant Mac & cheese, along with snack bars and such
  • Small gifts for the nannies and the orphanage director (we bought him a Ohio State Buckeyes hat since it represents the area where are living)
I know we've just scratched the surface, and we're also cognisant of the weight limitations for the luggage too (50 lbs for our United flights, 44 lbs for the China domestic flights). I'm also trying to make sure we carry the things necessary to update our blog and Facebook... (power converters, cell phones, DSLR camera, laptop, etc.)

So, a question to those out there who have gone to China before and have actively updated their blogs (specifically blogspot since it's tied to Google) - did you have issues connecting using the internet over there? Did you subscribe to a VPN service before you left? Is there one that's generally recommended and works well? Any advice would be appreciated!!

  1. I used the hotels internet service but that was 6+ years ago. Only had a little trouble connecting one time and we had a blogspot. I couldn't view it before posting. Maybe your travel agent can tell you. Have a safe trip, God Bless!

  2. We used the hotels internet service as well 3 years ago, with no problems. However our blog was on Shutterfly, not blogspot. I heard with blogspot, to have a backup blog person at home. Ex - email that person your blog update and pix, and then that person would post the update to the blog. Have a wonderful trip!

  3. You will most likely need a VPN, they are cheap and you can cancel as soon as you get home. I wouldn't take the chance on hoping the internet will work because it wont. We used express VPN.
We were in China this past Feb to bring home our son.
Also things like Ramen noodles are readily available in China, they are a staple. So I wouldn't waste your luggage space with these items. All hotel rooms have a hot water pot.
Also if you use Skype, which we did almost everyday, put $10 on your account so that you can make phone calls. It's only a few cents to call back to the USA and it was nice when we needed to contact our guide and didn't have a phone. This was helpful to call my Mom and then have her go on Skype with our daughter back home.
    Have a wonderful trip!
